He claimed a hilltop site near Blum's Inn on Route M25, and built his place of all-native stone, ferro-cement roof support, and his own topsoil for a two-foot thick roof. He calls it Atelier Thistledown. His goats and the neighbors' sheep enjoy keeping the grass cropped. She claimed enough space to build her retreat without any worry of building inspectors or tax collectors. She purchased a deed and a plat map that describes her site, which is hers indefinitely. She chose this lot in the genteel Peagarden Neighborhood in central Putney, and built this sort-of-Modernist house, crafted with local sand block, stucco, ceramic tile and tree trunks for porch pillars. The large upstairs bedroom/art studio has a fine view of Putney Bay. NOTE: the front walkway leading to the house was laid in 1911 for a Russian dry goods trader, but his wife, pining for her homeland, didn't want to stay. That house was never built. Snow-capped Mt. Hayes, New Island's active (though sleeping) volcano, dominates the background. Location: At the mouth of the Barysh River, near the port town of Skegness. It's on a back road miles from anywhere in the Sheffield Desert. He also offers sundry supplies, snacks and beverages to travelers heading to the Northern Coast beaches. Hopp's Store is officially a settlement, founded by Bernard's grandfather. Bernard was born here, but his family all moved on (or died) and a few other neighbors could not thrive here, and left after a short time. Note: The solar-powered vehicles and the burro in the parking lot are common forms of transportation here.
